Course Description: A selection of French nineteenth-century novels approached from a variety of critical, historical, and theoretical perspectives. Readings will be drawn from the canon of classic works by Chateaubriand, Madame de Staƫl, Constant, Stendhal, Balzac, Sand, Hugo, Flaubert, Sand, Zola, Maupassant, Huysmans, and Proust. Some attention will be paid to French painting in this period as artists and novelists alike challenged the norms governing what could be shown and told. Cross-listed with 195:354:01
