Purpose

The Rutgers Summer Program in Paris is an academic program designed to provide students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and culture of France in the best possible social and intellectual environment and at the lowest cost.

Faculty & Staff

The faculty is composed of professors from prestigious French universities and faculty members from Rutgers University who accompany the group. The 2010 Summer Program will be directed by Professor Lorraine Piroux of the Department of French, Rutgers-New Brunswick.

Program of Study

Students are placed at levels appropriate to their ability in small classes that meet for two one hundred minute sessions four mornings a week (M-T-Th-F). Students are expected to give top priority to their academic obligations. The minimum language requirement is the equivalent of two years of college-level French. An academic program of 6 to 7.5 credits will be chosen from the following:

171.THEATER WORKSHOP(1.5 credits)
Practical aspects of French theater.Production of selected scenes and plays.(May be taken for no credit.)

213.INTENSIVE ADVANCED GRAMMAR(3 credits)
The sounds, forms, and structures of French; grammar, phonetics, translation, vocabulary building, and composition.Oral drill and frequent written work.

215.ASPECTS OF FRENCH LITERATURE(3 credits)
An introduction to French literature through the reading and discussion (oral and written) of representative works from romanticism to existentialism.

303.CULTURE, CONVERSATION, AND COMPOSITION (3 credits)
Development of fluency and spontaneity of oral and written expressions through cultural explorations, group discussions, and debates.

337.FRENCH THEATER(3 credits)
Analysis and discussion of French theater as a literary genre and as a representation of society.  As far as possible, plays studied will include plays being performed in Paris theaters during Summer 2010. Class assignments will then include attending the performances.

405.MODERN FRANCE(3 credits)
France has evolved rapidly since the founding of the Fifth Republic five decades ago into a highly modernized society characterized by generous social protections, a vibrant participatory democracy, and an unpredictable economy. The envy of some, it is an object of scorn for others. We will learn why this is so by exploring the nation's political, economic, and social systems in the context of the European Union. Open to students with three or more years of college French.

469.VISIONS OF PARIS (3 credits)
An exploration of the diverse ways in which French writers and artists have represented and imagined Paris from the French Revolution to today.  Open to students with three or more years of college French.

Grades

Grades are based on examinations and class performance according to the Rutgers University system. Students receive a regular Rutgers Summer Session grade report; transcripts will be available on request. Requests for special grading arrangements (e.g., P/F) must be made and approved before the program begins.

Cultural Activities

At the heart of the Rutgers program lies an emphasis on the connection between the contemporary cultural life in France and the intellectual content of the courses. Hence, the program includes a significant number of visits to the beautiful museums, cathedrals, and other monuments of Paris and neighboring sites (such as Versailles), as well as participation in a variety of Parisian cultural events (plays, concerts, etc.). In some cases, cultural activities - research in a library or in a museum, visiting a specific neighborhood - may fulfill part of the course requirements. Generally, active involvement in Parisian cultural life will be encouraged by all available means. Finally, a five-day Bastille Day recess allows students to schedule independent activities from July 10 through July 14.

Living Arrangements

One of the highlights of the Rutgers Summer Program in Paris is that students reside with French hosts. All hosts are selected with the utmost care and are located in the some of best neighborhoods of Paris. Lodging arrangements include a private room (for one or two students depending on availability as well as student preference) and a daily breakfast. Most hosts allow the use of their kitchen for other meals. Rutgers provides each student with a pass that allows for free bus and subway transportation in Paris for the duration of the program. These arrangements offer students the opportunity to experience France and Paris in an individual and uniquely authentic fashion.

Transportation

The program makes competitively priced round-trip air travel, New York (Newark Liberty International Airport) to Paris, available for purchase by participants (payment made directly to travel agent). Students may arrange air travel independently if they wish. Group bus travel, to and from the Paris airport, at the beginning and end of the program, is included in the program fee.

Admission & Application

The Rutgers Summer Program in Paris is open to both Rutgers and non-Rutgers students. The minimum language requirement is the equivalent of two years of college-level French. While there is no formal deadline for applications, selecting the best hosts requires limiting the group to twenty-four students. All applications will therefore be considered on a space-available basis. Given the success of our program in previous years, we advise all candidates to apply as soon as possible. The non-refundable application fee is $10.
